Linux & KDE: K Learning Aid
Introduction
K Learning Aid (KLAid) pops up KVTML file entries on the desktop. Use KWordQuiz or FlashKard to produce KVTML files and load them into KLAid. It will grab all complete n x m related items (e.g. “Question” and “Answer”, or “Word A” and “Word B”) and displays them periodically as popups on the desktop. It is like someone is sitting behind you making sure you know all the terms for your next exam or test while surfing the web, coding, or doing other things on your computer. The program is available in dutch, english, german, and slovenian language.
System requirements
KLAid requires GNU/Linux, KDE, and its dependencies. Actually KDE itself is not needed but kdelibs 3.3.1. KDE gives you the best experience though as there are several issues using KLAid’s system tray icon using other desktop environments. The most recent binary of KLAid needs kdelibs 3.5.5. Recommended GNU/Linux distribtions for KLAid are Kubuntu Edgy and openSuse 10.2/KDE. Other distributions have not been tested so far (please report successes and failures on other distributions, see below for contact information).
Installation
Download the installer. After completion, make sure the installer is executable, either by “chmod +x {filename of installer}” in xterm or by right-clicking the installer and editing the file’s permissions. Then doubleclick the installer and follow on-screen instructions. KLAid then is accessible through your programs menu or K-Menu.
Usage
First, create a KVTML file using KWordQuiz or FlashKard. Both programs are part of the kdeedu package. Alternatively, take one of the files provided by the KDE Edutainment Project. Start K Learning Aid by clicking “K Learning Aid->K Learning Aid” in the K-Menu. Select your desired KVTML file in the file settings tab. Now change popup settings or KLAid’s appearance if you want to. When you’re ready to go, click “OK”. The window will disappear now. Until it is restored again, all user interaction will take place in the system tray. KLAid will start raising popups after a few moments. You may drag the popups around if they block sight and they will stay where you put them. Right-click KLAid’s tray icon for suspending popups temporarily or restoring the config window.
